The Met Gala is one of the most anticipated events in fashion. It’s a night when celebrities come together to celebrate the art and culture of fashion, while also raising money for important causes. This year, we’re looking back at some of the most memorable outfits in the event’s history.

We’ve been wearing pyjamas to work for a year and a half, we’ve given up non-elasticated waistbands, and our heels are collecting dust beneath our mattresses.
But, when the Met Gala returns tonight, New York will really bring fashion back into our living rooms — apart from those black tie Zoom quizzes we dressed up for.
Following a year off due to the pandemic in 2020, style and showbiz’s most fashion forward personalities will celebrate clothes produced in the United States under the subject ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.’
The event’s co-hosts are Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka, while honorary chairmen are Tom Ford, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour.
We’ll have to wait and see what the celebrities have in store for us since the potential for them to interpret the subject is fairly wide here – not that they usually adhere to the theme anyway – so we’ll have to wait and see what they have in store for us.
But, before the red carpet arrives, we can remember about some of the Met Gala’s most memorable, daring, and stunning outfits.
Here are the clothes that we can’t get out of our minds years later, from camp classics to gowns that took years to make.
Through the Looking Glass with Rihanna in China (2015)

Rihanna is the one celebrity who encapsulates the Met Gala.
Whether it’s dressing up like a rose bush to pay homage to COMME des GARCONS’ Rei Kawakubo or donning a pope hat to adhere to the Heavenly Bodies concept, the Fenty entrepreneur never fails to wow.
Her 2015 outfit for the China: Through The Looking Glass event, however, takes the cake.
Riri took over the Met Gala stairs in a yellow cape gown designed by Chinese couturier Guo Pei that took more than two years to make, weighed 25kg, and had a 16-foot train.
Rihanna’s train, which doubled as an omelette and a pizza due to Twitter, was not only a walking piece of art, but it also produced a slew of memes.
Notes on Fashion from Kim Kardashian at Camp (2019)

Kim also had a number of outstanding outfits at the Met Gala, including her flowery dress and gloves. she wore on her first outing
She did, however, achieve peak Kardashian fashion at the 2019 Met Gala, when she wore Thierry Mugler’s jaw-dropping silicone dress to interpret “Camp: Notes on Fashion.”
Kim’s nude dress took eight months to create and was adorned in pouring crystals to make her appear as if she’d just stepped out of the sea.
Kim wore a Mr Pearl couture corset underneath the dress, which left her unable to urinate and with indentations all over her stomach and back.
Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, Chadwick Boseman (2018)

Often, the focus at the Met Gala is on the ladies, but every now and again, a guy comes up and perfectly matches the brief.
At the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination event, the late Chadwick Boseman wore a Versace white cloak studded with gold crosses, demonstrating his immaculate taste.
One of the most impressive male looks we’ve seen at the Met Gala.
Notes on Fashion from Katy Perry at Camp (2019)

Katy came dressed like a real chandelier in a bespoke Moschino outfit, ensuring the party was lighted – literally – for the 2019 event.
Katy wore a crystal adorned gown with a chandelier that hung around her waist and an elaborate headdress that had to be a pain to hold.
A+ for dedication.
Through the Looking Glass with Beyonce in China (2015)

Beyonce arrived late to the China: Through The Looking Glass event, but who needs to be on time when you’re Beyonce and you’re looking this good?
Bey wowed in a Givenchy ‘naked dress,’ which had perfectly placed green, white, and pink crystals embroidered on a form-fitting transparent garment.
On those crimson stairs, Beyonce made sure to work her angles like the expert she is.

The Met Gala has been regarded as the gem in NYC’s social crown since the 1970s, despite an increase in attendance and celebrity power during the last decade.
Cher donned an iconic Bob Mackie outfit to the event entitled Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design in 1974, proving she was – and still is – the queen of elegance.
Cher donned the transparent beaded gown with white feathery sleeves and a matching feathered skirt on the cover of Time magazine, and it became one of the most iconic nude gowns of all time.
Notes on Fashion from Billy Porter at Camp (2019)

Billy Porter, the star of Pose, is known for making a big impression on the red carpet, and he did it again in 2019 when he was carried into the Met Gala by six shirtless men in a reference to Ancient Egypt.
While that would have been enough to get him on this list, Billy then unveiled his Sun God outfit, which included a bejewelled catsuit, a 24-karat gold headpiece, gold leaf Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, jewels from Andreoli, John Hardy, and Oscar Heyman, and, most importantly, 10 foot wings, which were custom made by The Blonds.
Camp? Yes, please.
Notes on Fashion from Lady Gaga at Camp (2019)

We knew Lady Gaga would be extra AF since she was one of the chairmen of Camp: Notes on Fashion, and because she is Lady Gaga.
Gaga didn’t disappoint, changing her wardrobe four times before she even entered the event.
Gaga donned a voluminous fuchsia Brandon Maxwell gown that she unzipped to reveal a black ballgown underneath.
A pink column gown sat underneath it… Underneath that, Gaga wore black panties and fishnets while wheeling a Haus of Gaga beverages cart.
The most extreme.

SJP is a must-attend at any New York fashion event, and her best performance occurred in 2014 at Charles James: Beyond Fashion.
She wore a beautiful Oscar de la Renta gown with a black criss-cross pattern on the train to resemble a dress form, giving a reference to James’s aesthetic.
The designer’s name was embroidered in red calligraphy on the train in case you didn’t know who she was wearing.

Any occasion allows you to wear a beautiful dress or a smart suit, but the Met Gala allows celebrities to be really bizarre.
So hats off to Jared Leto, who showed up to the 2019 event with a facsimile of his own head.
Jared’s head had the same beautiful long hair as the models’ severed heads at Gucci’s horrific 2018 presentation, and it was shared among the other guests throughout the night.
Jared wore a royal crimson Gucci suit covered with diamonds, and he didn’t skimp on his style.
